This is the valley where the Oracle Of Delphi is located. Visitors would sail to a nearby bay of the Ionian Sea, and then ride up to the temple complex.
It was inside The Apollon Temple that the Oracle, in the shape of a woman, gave advice to the visiting representatives of the Greek states.
The amphitheatre was built around 400 BC, and restored by the romans.
This reconstruction of the Athenian Treasury is an example of the buildings in which the different city states put their offerings to the Oracle on display, for all visitors to see.
According to Greek mythology, Zeus released two eagles, one flying East and the other one West, and they met again exactly above this "Navel of the World" in Delphi.
Besides giving advice, Delphi was home to the Pythian Festival, a kind of competitor to the Olympic Games, every 4 years. The sports competitions took place at this large stadium above the entire temple complex.
Somewhat further down the vally you find the remains of the athletes' training facilities.
This sculpture has become famous for its eyes, which seem to follow you when you walk around it. The bronze charioteer was a commemoration of a victory in the Pythian Games in either 478 or 474 BC.
