This is the plain where the Battle Of Marathon took place in 490BC. The persians landed 600 ships on the beach to the left and put ashore 25,000 troops.
This is the actual battle area, with the burial mound to the South/right. It is very level and fertile and good farming earth.
The beach where the 600 Persian ships landed is very easy to land on. The beach is easy to cross and an excellent beachhead. Today the beach is lined with outdoor discos and nightclubs.
The burial mound is the main location in Marathon about the Battle Of Marathon. This is where the only 192 athenians who died in the battle are buried. In comparison the persians lost 6,400 men.
The commemorative column is the other major site on the Marathon plain about the Battle Of Marathon.
This statue which is at the corner of the burial mound site next to the parking is a good illustration of a Greek soldier in the battle.
